Chapter 1

Sleep is very important to longevity. While you’re asleep, your brain and other vital organs are functioning to preserve your mental and physical health, as well as your safety, quality of life, and emotional wellbeing. Thus, the lack of sleep is detrimental to health and can be life-threatening. If you have trouble sleeping, it may be due to a form of sleep disorder. In this book, we will take a look at ‘Insomnia’, which is the most common type of sleep disorder.

What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a sleep deficiency that occurs when one has difficulty sleeping despite having plenty of opportunities to sleep. Most people with insomnia either don’t get enough sleep (waking up too early) or don’t get good-quality sleep (not feeling rested or refreshed), which can lead them to feel tired and have low energy. It may also impair their overall mood, concentration, and performance.

Mainly, insomnia is experienced in three settings,

  1. Onset – when you have difficulty falling asleep or your sleep onset is delayed until the early hours of the morning,
  2. Maintenance – when you have difficulty staying asleep, which could be due to nightmares, night terrors, pain, illness, or restlessness,
  3. Late – when you wake up too early and can’t fall back asleep.

Insomnia, which affects six (6) to ten (10) percent of adults, is quite a widespread condition. However, as common as insomnia is, it is frequently overlooked, undiagnosed, and untreated. As a result, it can increase your risk for medical conditions, like stroke, seizures, sensitivity to pain, inflammation, heart disease, etc. It can also increase your risk for mental health disorders, like depression, anxiety, confusion, irritation, and/or frustration.

Studies that examined the correlation between sleep duration and mortality, concludes that less sleep may increase your risk of dying sooner than expected.

In this guide, you will learn more about insomnia, the types and causes, as well as how to combat it.
